Amrit Catla (GI Catla)

Amrit Catla is an improved strain of Catla developed for higher aquaculture productivity. It was selectively bred under Indian research programs by CIFA, Bhubaneshwar to enhance growth and performance.

The strain originates from superior genetic lines of Ganga riverine Catla. Amrit Catla shows significantly faster growth compared to normal Catla. It can attain higher body weight within a shorter culture period. The strain has better feed conversion efficiency and survival rate.

Amrit Catla is suitable for intensive and semi-intensive farming practices & reservoir fishery. It contributes to higher yield per hectare, improving farmer income.

Jayanti Rohu

Jayanti Rohu is an improved strain of Labeo rohita developed by ICAR-CIFA. It was developed through selective breeding under the All India Coordinated Research Project.

The strain was released in 1997 to enhance aquaculture productivity. Jayanti Rohu shows 15–20% higher growth compared to normal Rohu. It has better feed conversion efficiency and faster weight gain. It adapts well to different agro-climatic conditions across India. Jayanti Rohu is widely used in composite fish culture systems.

It contributes significantly to higher fish production and farmer profitability.

GIFT Tilapia (Genetically Improved Farmed Tilapia)

GIFT Tilapia is one of the most popular and fast-growing fish varieties in modern aquaculture. Developed through selective breeding, it offers rapid growth, high survival, efficient feed conversion, and strong disease resistance—making it ideal for commercial farming.

It performs well across pond culture, cage culture, biofloc systems, and reservoir farming. Its adaptability and fast growth enable higher productivity and better profitability compared to traditional strains.

Widely preferred for its mild taste, firm flesh, and high nutritional value, GIFT Tilapia is a top seafood choice.

An excellent option for farmers aiming to maximize production, profitability, and sustainability.

Common carp (Cyprinus carpio)

Common carp (Cyprinus carpio) is one of the most widely cultured freshwater fish in India. It is an exotic species introduced for aquaculture due to its fast growth and adaptability. The fish has a robust body, large scales, and characteristic barbels near the mouth.

Common carp is a bottom feeder, feeding on detritus, insects, and organic matter. It thrives well in ponds, tanks, and low-oxygen conditions compared to other carps. In India, it is commonly cultured along with Indian Major Carps in composite fish culture systems.

Stocking density generally ranges from 5,000 to 8,000 fingerlings per hectare. The species shows rapid growth and can reach 1–1.5 kg within 8–10 months. Spawning usually occurs during winter season Common carp plays a key role in increasing overall fish production from reservoirs & farm ponds in India.

Amur Carp (Improved Common Carp)

Amur carp is an improved strain of Cyprinus carpio introduced from the Amur River region (Russia–China). It was brought to India to enhance productivity and growth performance in carp culture.

The strain was developed through selective breeding and genetic improvement programs. Selection focused on fast growth, disease resistance, and better feed conversion efficiency.

Amur carp adapts well to Indian pond conditions and shows higher survival than local strains. It grows faster, often reaching market size earlier than traditional common carp. The strain has better resistance to environmental stress and common diseases.Feed utilization is more efficient, resulting in improved production per unit area.

Grass Carp – Fast-Growing Freshwater Species

Grass Carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) is a fast-growing, herbivorous freshwater fish widely cultured in India and globally. Native to East Asia, it is valued for rapid growth, efficient feed conversion, and good meat quality.

Key Benefits
  • Fast Growth:Reaches market size quickly with proper pond management
  • Herbivorous Diet: Feeds on aquatic weeds, helping maintain pond ecology
  • High Survival: Adapts well to ponds, reservoirs, and polyculture systems
  • Quality Flesh: White, firm meat with mild taste and good nutrition
  • Eco-Friendly: Controls excess vegetation in integrated farming systems

An excellent choice for farmers seeking high productivity, lower feed costs, and sustainable aquaculture with consistent returns.

Indian Major Carps (Catla, Rohu, Mrigal)

Indian Major Carps (IMCs) are the backbone of freshwater aquaculture in India. The three main species are Catla, Rohu, and Mrigal. They are widely cultured due to their fast growth and high market demand. These species are native to Indian rivers like the Ganga, Yamuna, and Brahmaputra. Each species occupies a different feeding niche, making them ideal for composite fish culture. Catla feeds on surface zooplankton, Rohu prefers column feeding, and Mrigal feeds at the bottom.

They are herbivorous to omnivorous, making them economical to culture. Indian Major Carps contribute significantly to inland fish production in India. They are commonly bred through induced breeding techniques in hatcheries. IMCs play a crucial role in ensuring food security and livelihood for fish farmers.
